I’m in a quandary, and reaching out for advice. I know a blog post isn’t necessarily the best place (I’m also asking in other venues), but I’m putting this here in case an industry professional should cruise by and feel like chiming in.
I write both contemporary and paranormal romances. In my agent search to date, I’ve only been submitting to agents who are accepting queries for both. Besides the fact that the idea of having two agents makes my eyes want to cross, maybe I’m naive but… well, in my mind an agent was someone who believes in me and goes to bat for me for whatever I write (at least if she (or he) feels it’s marketable, right? I do get that!)… keeping in mind, we’re talking the same genre here, romance.
However… this is *seriously* inhibiting the number of agents I can submit to. I’m passing on querying some pretty damned good agents, simply because they don’t accept one or the other of these subgenres. Should I just query them anyway, and if someone picks up, for instance, my contemporaries, shout hurray and celebrate and cheer and do back-flips! …and then keep looking for a second agent to take the paranormal? At this point I’m fully invested in both, with a series in each subgenre, and tons of ideas for more. I’m not ever going to only write contemporary romance or only write paranormal romance.
