Bartz v. Anthropic: The Settlement Is Moving Forward — Here's What You Need to Know
If you filed a claim in the Bartz v. Anthropic copyright settlement, here's your quick update on where things stand and when you can expect to see money.
On July 20, 2026, Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted final approval of the landmark $1.5 billion settlement — the largest copyright settlement in U.S. history. All 53 objections were overruled, and the case is now closed.
The 30-day appeal window passed on August 19 without any challenge to the settlement itself. Two law firms did file appeals, but both are limited strictly to the attorney fee award — they have no effect on payments to class members.
What happens next:
Class counsel filed a Status Report with the court on September 2 outlining the distribution plan. Per that Report, here's the timeline:
By September 4, claimants should receive an email with a link to a consolidated form listing their works and percentage share of the settlement. You'll have 30 days to contest anything that looks incorrect.
SEPTEMBER 4TH UPDATE I did receive the email today, September 4th. Watch for an email from Anthropic Copyright Settlement Administrator at anthropiccopyrightsettlement(dot)com.
The first payment — estimated at approximately $2,203.56 per work — will be sent to class members on or before November 15, 2026. This is based on the funds currently in escrow.
A second payment of approximately $930 per work is expected after Anthropic's next installment of $450 million is deposited, due September 25, 2027, bringing the total estimated payout to just over $3,100 per work.
Important: these are estimates, not guaranteed figures. Don't panic if your first payment is in that $2,200 range — the second payment follows later.
