Playing with Fire is the first book in the urban fantasy (I think?) series A Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count). There are 23 books at the time of this review, and I NEVER want it to end! And yes... I've read all 23. I'm a bit behind on writing reviews... but I HAVE read the entire series twice so far :) So... whether this book is paranormal romance or urban fantasy I've never been quite able to figure out but to be honest, it simply doesn't matter! Each book does have romance with a HEA... so in that criteria it's paranormal romance, but the settings are more like urban fantasy... but again... doesn't matter, because in the end what you have are simply amaaaazing stories, one way or the other!!!
It all begins with Baily, a cindercorn (fire-breathing unicorn) who's a barista by day and has an unfortunate side gig finding people... which is how she comes to be at odds with Police Chief Quinn, whose cheating wife she tracked down and provided proof. Ouch. That's a hard one to get over, even when Quinn assures her that she did him a favor.
As a cindercorn, Bailey's immune to a lot of things... you know, explosives, C4, bombs (including potentially nuclear), and... her reaction when in a bulding flooded with napalm was simply too hilarious for words! In fact, she's specifically forbidden napalm by the very government agency who also contracts her to work for them on an emergency basis! And the way she begs whenever she thinks she can have napalm will have you rolling in the aisles. She also teleports using sunbeams... with (unfortunate) results for her (unfortunate) riders, which simply will have you snickering nonstop.
Also VERY endearing is the way she has difficulty speaking as a cindercorn, so her speech is abbreviated, to the point, and oddly poignant in and of itself.
