Some things surprise you in the best possible way. When I commissioned Eeva Lancaster of The Book Khaleesi to create a song for When Darkness Falls, I knew she was talented. What I didn't expect was to be reduced to tears — repeatedly — before I could even make out all the lyrics. This is a haunting duet of male and female voices, trading lines the way my hero and heroine circle each other in the story, coming together only when fate demands it. Spare and ancient-feeling, mostly flute, harp, and drum, slow and undulating, like desert heat rising off stone.
Eeva didn't just write me a song. She wrote a ballad. The myth of my story — the kind that gets passed down around campfires, and outlasts everything.
I'm still alternating weeping and smiling when I listen to it... sometimes at the same time!
When Darkness Falls is a 16th century fantasy romance trilogy set in the ancient desert city of Al Khair, a richly imagined world drawing from both Persian and Indian cultures, where humans, vampires, shapeshifters, demons, and Djinn coexist in an uneasy truce. When Alyssa, a young woman fleeing a tragic past, arrives in Al Khair with nothing but determination and hope, she finds herself drawn into a world of intrigue, magic, and danger — and into the orbit of Lord Damien, the formidable vampire ruler of the mountains surrounding the city.
